In the heat of the night (En el calor de la noche) de Norman Jewison [1967]

In the heat of the night (1967) de Norman Jewison, director d’altres com Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) o Fiddler on the Roof (1971), va guanyar l’Òscar a la millor pel·lícula, a més del millor actor (Rod Steiger) , millor guió, so i muntatge. A banda va fer-se amb diversos Golden globes i alguns BAFTA. Alguns diuen que va ser sobrevalorada.

Història ambientada a un poble del sud dels Estats Units, Esparta, Mississippi. Una nit apareix assassinat un dels homes més rics del poble. Poques hores després Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Pottier), un home negre, és arrestat, però resulta ser un reputat inspector d’homicidis. Tibbs es veu forçat a esclarir el crim front a la desconfiança d’un poble surista marcat pels prejudicis racials i havent-se d’enfrontar a Bill Gillespie (Rod Steiger), un cap de policia prou desagradable.
